I’m Lucifer, I’m 24, and I’m and addict. At least when it comes to BJD dolls.
So’ I’ve finally done it. Instagram with its character limits and photo cropping and repeating shadow bans for no apparent reason apart from swearing too much has gotten me to create myself a blog. Carol had the honors of starring in the title, since he’s currently the Oldest Resin in the House. I’ll get this blog properly started with fresh pictures soon enough, but for now, let me just sprinkle the page with some gems from the past.
As most of
you probably know, my dolls are time-travelling outlaws from the Wild West ages. This blog shall be dedicated to their journey. It’s a weird universe that
was accidentally born when I wanted my dolls to walk around in historical
costumes, but there were also too many nice modern clothes around to pass them
up. I hoarded the clothes, and then came up with an excuse to put them to use.
Classic.
I’ve written books and stories for almost half my life, and I’ve always loved comping up with characters, so I’ve also gotten quite immersed in the doll story. Originally the universe of Carol Cole the ginger gunslinger was just something I made up in 2018 because shelling any characters from my then-existing books seemed like mission impossible.
My collection changes occasionally, but I’ve gotten so much scolding from publishers and done so many editorial rounds and those “kill your darlings” things on the book writing side that I’m basically dead inside. I don’t feel anything when I get rid of a character. Except maybe frustration when I have to rewrite the entire damn book due to that. Yeah, that one stings pretty much. Luckily, my doll story is not in written form, so I can keep twisting it around like there's no tomorrow.
English is not my first or even second language. I’m a Finn, not that it matters anything to collecting BJD, but it might explain why I’m so twisted and seem like I live under a rock. The language does matter in one thing, namely, I will not be capable of writing full chapters of my dolls’ stories in English, but I do like sharing some general trivia, behind the scenes, photos and character facts.
This was real read wine in the glass, and I was scared for Jules' shirt in case his fingers would slip.
My blog will probably be the perfect source of here’s-the-characters-and-plot-to-write-your-own-bestseller-since-I-am-too-lazy. Anyway, I’d like to make one thing clear since my character ramblings will probably go deeper than any of my Instagram posts: I’m fond of my characters, and they are a result of eight years of consecutive brain farts and personal life events, so please do not copy or inspire from my characters or stories to the extent that it would be recognizable. Whether it be in doll looks or in creative writing. Of course, it’s none of my business what anyone does privately, and I don’t own red-haired Venitus, and characters or ideas don’t have copyright, and obviously I too drew inspiration from other people’s works (*ahem* RDR2 *ahem*), and, and, but I would appreciate it if my characters and stories are respected as mine.
I take kindly to fan fiction, though. It's not like "don't touch my characters", more like "don't take my characters and present them as your own".
I’ve got a
lot of catching up to do here after dumping six years' worth of my doll stories onto
Instagram, but I’ll start with some basics about who I am and what I am doing
here.
I
discovered BJDs in 2016, when I was tired of customizing Monster High dolls. I
was not expecting to find anything I had not seen already, until I saw my first
BJD on Google. Little did I know what was coming, and I bought my first BJD the
same year. He was a Dollshe Grant Phillippe, the 44 cm MSD version. I wanted the
70 cm SD version, but my mother insisted I take the smaller one. I get it, the big
one was rather intimidating compared to the dolls I had owned before. A gut
feeling is a gut feeling, however, and I did not own Grant for long. Now all of
my crew is 58 to 70 cm. I’m specific about all my dolls fitting together
size-wise and style-wise. I guess it’s one of my Collecting Rules. A necessary thing
to keep the wallet and head sane.
I have always liked dolls (apart from baby-like or childlike dolls, that’s not my cup of tea), but after BJDs took over, I haven’t had other dolls. No cheating on the resins! What got me into BJDs was the possibility to customize everything, plus the fact that the bigger size allows for more detailed outfits and props. I was a Toy Story’s Sid kind of horror to my dolls before BJDs. I cut their painted-on eyes out, dyed their hair with Pro-Markers, painted their faces and violently pierced their ears and noses with needles. A doll that had the same hair, eyes and face forever just wasn't the right thing for me.
And how’s the collection going? Currently, I have 12 full dolls and 2 bodies. Things are pretty calm in the doll kingdom right now, nothing is tempting my money and I’m only waiting for one new arrival for this spring (Bimong N60S on Narae 58 body). Though, I’ve been “happy with what I have” and “not getting any more dolls” for at least the past 3 years now, yet every year I end up impulse-selling 25% of my collection and jumping at a dozen new preorders, and somehow more dolls always manage to get in than what I throw out.
As for my
goals for this blog, I don’t know? Writing about doll stories, showing new
arrivals, sharing promises I’ll break and plans I’ll change. We’ll see. Doubt I’ll
be a frequent poster, since very little is happening in my collection these
days. Maybe I’d try to be a better photographer, though. A lot of my pictures
have been taken with a phone straight from the stone age. When I was discussing
starting up this blog, someone asked me if I am not worried about art theft and
copyright infringements if more people see my pictures. I was like “Art? Me?
Dude, you’ve seen my Instagram, I’d need to pay anyone to post this crap
in their name!”
I’ll likely
still be updating my Instagram (found under lucifer_roux) since it’s a lot more
simple, but we’ll see how these two platforms establish their power dynamics.
As a disclaimer, in case anyone finds this blog from Google instead of my Instagram and wonders what the heck they’ve just gotten into (what were you even googling for to find this, NSFW outlaws?): I’m a strictly pro-artist collector, and will not accept or support the ownership of “recasts”, knock-offs or illegal copies of these artist dolls. All my dolls are, and will always be, legit.
Also, this is not the "where to find your first BJD for cheap and how to avoid accidentally buying recasts" kind of site. Why not? Even if it's our common mission as a hobby to help new hobbyists to a safe start, many people already host pages, lists and link databases assembled in a far more informative manner than I could ever do as someone who pretty much took a dive straight to the deep end and has a narrow scope of interest when it comes to doll companies I collect from. That being said, I can certainly guide you towards the right places if that's what brought you here.
And another
disclaimer: my priest boys are not the proper christian type, and we’re not
going to be very heterosexual around here. I’m keeping any NSFW content to the
minimum, but occasionally you might see a resin tit or two. Perhaps even an anatomically incorrect doll schlong, although those things are rare around here. If you’re easily
insulted or underage, ye been warned. Maybe this should be in the banner? Na, I
prefer traumatizing people.
Here’s to
sum up the warning in one visual piece of evidence:
Cant wait to read your blog! Good luck! Papilionette
